Facts about Scorpions and How to Prevent Them

When you hear the someone mention scorpions, most of us think of a terrifying lethal creature you see in movies. However, scorpions are more common and less horrifying than these villains of the silver screen seem to be.

Scorpions can be found in many of the southwestern states. They are members of the arachnid family with their eight legs and are closely related to spiders, ticks, and mites. They are identified by an elongated body and a segmented tail that is tipped with a venomous stinger. Scorpions are commonly thought of as desert animals, but in fact, they can live in many other habitats as well.

• Most of the scorpions that enter dwellings are not poisonous. Their sting is similar to bees or wasps. A typical non poisonous scorpion is the common striped Centruroides vittatus, otherwise known as striped back scorpion. This scorpion is found across most of Texas. They have two wide dark bands across the back, giving it the “striped back’” name. The Arizona bark scorpion on the other hand, is a poisonous scorpion, usually pale and small in appearance which makes it difficult to see. Luckily, this scorpion is not usually found in Texas.

Scorpions are pretty simple creatures – they look for darkness, moisture, food and a comfortable place to lay their strange, exoskeletal heads. Try to limit dingy corners where possible around the home by allowing in sunlight. Do your best to limit any unwanted moisture around your house – this means leaky pipes, standing puddles of water, moisture leaking through from the outside and so on. Keep your yard and exterior in good condition – don’t let logs, leaves, mulch and piles of stones and so forth accumulate near the home as this can attract scorpions.
